How To Get Involved At My Loved Ones Senior Living Community

Building Relationships and connecting.

When a loved one moves to a senior living community, it can raise many questions. Will they like living at their new community? How long will it take them to adjust to their new surroundings and feel comfortable? What will the role of family members be in their new life, and how will they adapt? While it can feel overwhelming at times, here are some ways you can get involved and help your loved one and yourself make the most of their new community and all it has to offer.

Ways to stay connected to your loved one.

First, you and your loved one should know that the family members of residents are considered an essential part of the community. Both residents and associates at The Palms at Plantation welcome the opportunity to get to know the families of other residents. Here are a few ways to get involved:

  1. Get to know staff members and caregivers. While your loved one’s care is undoubtedly a top priority, you’ll both enjoy learning about the people they spend their time with at their new community. You’ll soon discover common ground by asking about staff members’ families, interests and aspirations.
  2. Help staff members get acquainted with your loved one. You have an opportunity to help caregivers learn about your loved one. The better they know your loved one, the more they are able to personalize their care. As a family member, encourage your loved one to share their background, family history, interests and preferences.
  3. Become involved at the community. Most senior living communities welcome and encourage family involvement. If you’re able to participate in community events, you’ll meet even more of your loved one’s neighbors and caregivers. You can also inquire about volunteer opportunities and family support groups. Keep up with community communications and help your loved one get involved. Check the monthly activity calendar to stay up to date on all the happenings at the community.
  4. Visit regularly and communicate. Staying connected with your loved one gives them the comfort and confidence they need to find fulfillment at a new community. It can be challenging for long-distance family members to feel involved — but it is possible. At The Palms, we’ll work with those out-of-town to ensure they are always up to date on their loved one’s care and engaged in any way we can.
  5. Plan for special occasions. Outside of community-hosted events, you can also plan your own events for or with your loved one. Arrange to bring treats for their birthday or anniversary — this is also an opportunity to interact with other residents and staff members. Or reserve a private dining room or gathering space for a special meal or party.

At The Palms, we encourage residents and their families to get involved and make the most of our inviting retirement community. With our holistic approach, you’ll always find vibrant activities and new opportunities to enlighten, empower and entertain our residents, their families and guests.
